Gagra is a town in Abkhazia, situated on the Black Sea. The subtropical climate of the region had made Gagra a popular resort in Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union. The city's population has declined significantly because of the war of 1989-1993. Tens of thousands of Georgians were evicted, dispossessed of their homes and thousands were killed. Gagra, as the city of Sukhumi, suffered extensive damage. The town is now a little bit derelict, a little magic with its crumbling palace, the kind of atmosphere that I love.
